Destination Day!

For High School Seniors May 1st is “Decision Day.” This is traditionally the deadline for them to make their college decision (or signing). At many high schools across the country, Seniors wear their college t-shirt announcing publicly their choice. It’s a proud moment- one they have worked for and no doubt, an exciting moment to share!

For a moment, I ask you to consider a broader term that opens the circle and widens the horse shoe to include students on different paths; What if May 1st were celebrated as “Destination Day?” A dear friend of mine (newly retired teacher in another state) shared her son’s picture today showing which university he’ll be attending in the fall and had the hashtag “Destination Day!” I thought what a great way to celebrate the launch of the next chapter of all students without isolating or excluding any kids that may not be electing to take the college path– maybe working full-time, entering a trade program, enlisting in the military, taking a gap year. “Destination Day” truly celebrates it all! A little flip on words, with something to think about.
